  • Born in 1989 near Paris (Noisy-Le-Grand (93)), Stéphane Abitbol studies printmaking at the school of Les Gobelins, and starts painting in 2006. He lives and works in Brussels, Belgium, where he follows a Master Degree at la Cambre, in the painting department.

  • The works of Stephane Abitbol are investigating in many ways the possibility of painting. At first, he composed a series of canvases based on photographs depicting both urban riots and orgies. The processing made it look though like abstractions, with few indications of melting bodies. These works led to further more deconstruction of the picture, while he started to burn the frame and the fabric, as a preliminary step to start the tableau. All the physical properties of the canvas, like wood, tissue, coated or raw, or burned, become the constitutive elements of geometries and colors that will emerge, that will eventually become the painting. The recent works are more and more dedicated to the space itself, redifining the status of the painting in its context of exhibition.
